Not so long ago (2005 to be precise), two brave souls set out on a mission to change New Zealand. Their vision was to create something that would be good for the planet and good for the health of its people. And so Aidan Gellar and Marinda parker created the first Organical product.
We started with “Sugar Candie”, a naturally fermented product that was often determined to get out of the bottle before the top was cracked. It was a simple science, with the fermentation process left until the right carbonation was achieved. The ones that didn’t blow their stacks were distributed to eager health food stores in Hamilton. An explosive start! Organical (made with fresh sugar cane, lemon juice and yeast) is still our favourite product over 5 years later.
We’d created a purpose built manufacturing facility in beautiful south Waikato. Not only was this where we made and bottled our produce, but also where we practiced what we preach - making sure every part of our business is sustainable, now and in the future.
You’ll now find Organical in cafes, servos, supermarkets and restaurants around New Zealand, serving up the goodness to thirsty Kiwis. We’re also sending the fruits of our labours to appreciative drinkers around the globe!
Organical has been committed to organics since day one.
In the beginning this was tough, due to limited demand and low supply of organic ingredients. We compromised by making natural products, with no preservatives or artificial ingredients… but using organic ingredients wherever possible. In 1999, the demand and awareness of organics had risen, so we jumped in boots and all, committing fully to organics.
We began the process of converting all our lines over from natural to certified organic. Finding enough certified ingredients for our growing range remains a constant challenge, but one we relish.
As such, we reckon the only responsible direction for business is the sustainable way. Business must take responsibility for its impact on society and the environment… not just maintaining a profit to its shareholders.
Sustainability isn‘t just about businesses though. You (yes, we‘re talking to you here!) have the power to influence the big guys with every purchasing decision you make!
This is known as being an Ethical Consumer. It‘s about making choices that are small in themselves, but support good businesses and leave the baddies out in the cold. Every person‘s choice is small, but if we all do it, we‘ll make some big changes.
Keep an eye out for unethical behaviour of particular brands, and if you see evidence of it, write to them asking them to sharpen up their act!
Favour ethical products (be they fair trade, organic or cruelty free). This directly supports companies with good, sustainable practices.
Avoid products you disapprove of, such as battery eggs or overly-polluting cars. This removes support from bad companies
First distributed around Waikato in a VW Van, Organical is now the most widely distributed premium beverage brand in NZ! In the big towns Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) we’re in over 70% of all cafés, so you can grab a bottle next time you "do lunch" In supermarkets, we’ve broken out of the organic aisle and are taking over the beverage aisle… look for us there!
Our biggest export market, we crossed the ditch in 2008 and Organical is now distributed across most of Australia. find us in Melbourne and Sydney, but are working tirelessly to expand our reach.
